Understanding Ohio OVI Penalties
Many people may not foresee the extent of consequences that accompany an OVI. Penalties include:
- Administrative license suspension for six months for a first offense or one year for second or third offenses
- Heavy fines and driver's license reinstatement fees
- Mandatory alcohol education and treatment starting with the third offense
- Mandatory three days in jail and up to six months at the discretion of the court
- Possible vehicle confiscation or ignition interlock devices after the fourth offense
In Ohio, drivers with blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 percent or higher can be charged with an OVI. Drivers who are caught with a BAC of .17 or higher and underage drivers can also face harsher penalties. Individuals charged with felony OVI or a vehicular assault/homicide may also face prison time. And, those with commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) can lose their very livelihoods.
