Can ignition interlock devices put an end to OVIs?

It is so common to be charged with an OVI in the state of Ohio, even though the consequences of losing your license temporarily should be an adequate deterrent. Possibly, the reason why many people are charged with an OVI is because they are driving under the influence of alcohol without realising it. It is very easy to be over the legal limit and simply not know it, since it's not usually possible to check your own blood alcohol concentration.

However, ignition interlock devices could present a great solution for those wanting to avoid the harsh consequences of an OVI. The compulsory use of ignition interlock devices can be an alternative to a suspended license as the result of an OVI offense. The courts have imposed this penalty because of its proven effectiveness in preventing OVI offenses.

What is an ignition interlock device?

An ignition interlock device is a piece of equipment that is installed into a person's car. This device demands that it is blown into by the driver before the ignition of the car can be started. The car can only be started when the driver has successfully blown within the legal limit. It's basically a Breathalyzer test that unlocks the ignition in a person's car.

Ignition interlock devices have proven to be a safe and effective way to prevent repeat OVI offenses in Ohio, and it may be possible for OVI offenders to have one installed as an alternative to a suspended license. If you are interested in avoiding license suspension in Ohio, it is a good idea to explore your options.
