Why military relationships often end

It is true that those in the military have relatively high divorce rates. It just seems hard to make a marriage last, no matter how good their intentions were at the beginning. Why is this?

While every relationship is different, you can pin down some of the main reasons, and a big one is just time spent apart. While couples in other professions usually see each other every day, many military couples spend weeks or months apart. You can actually track divorce rates based on deployments, and those who get deployed also get divorced more often.

Another reason is stress. Military life is not for everyone. It is a complicated, high-stress profession. It is also very stressful for the spouse who is not in the military, as they constantly have to worry about the other person's health and safety.

Furthermore, many veterans come home with emotional and mental troubles from their time serving their country. While some get professional medical assistance to work through things like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), not all do. Even those who do may not ever completely overcome these issues.

You can imagine how hard it is for a couple to stay together if they deal with constant stress, spend too much time apart and feel like they barely even know each other based on mental or emotional changes after an active deployment. Plus, these are just three of the reasons -- there are many more.

At the end of the day, the odds of divorce are something military couples have to take seriously. Those who wind up ending their relationships need to know what legal rights they have.
