Hacking is not what you see in the movies

In the movies, hacking is exciting. It's flashy. It's innovative. Hackers are seen in different ways depending on the movie -- sympathetic or unsympathetic -- but it's almost always an exciting and exotic part of the film.

That's not what it's like in real life. Remember, hacking is just unauthorized access. It's something someone does to gain access to another person's system without permission. Logging into your own email isn't exciting. Neither is hacking into someone else's email account.

In the movies, they have to make it flashy to keep people's attention. In the real world, it's more about computers trying things out. Often, the computer just does this all by itself for hours on end. There may not be any user input. They set the system up to run by itself and then they check back to see if it gained access. No one wants to watch that on the big screen.

Hacking is also fairly fast in the movies. The protagonist needs to break into a system, finds a master hacker and has access a few minutes later. In reality, someone may spend months or years getting familiar with the software they need. Then it takes hours for that software to gain access. It's a slow, arduous process that is similar to typing computer code. It takes a long time to make up any real ground.

There are a lot of misconceptions about hacking, thanks to the movies. One thing that is for certain, though, is that it is illegal and all those who find themselves accused of this white collar crime need to know what defense options they have.
