Police in Ohio run 3 different OVI checkpoints

The police in Ohio remain committed to the idea that OVI checkpoints, as controversial as they sometimes are, continue to be one of the best ways to stop drunk driving. They recently ran three different checkpoints on the same night: Friday, Oct. 18. After the fact, they released the statistics and results from those checkpoints.

One checkpoint saw 306 cars pass through it while it was open. Of those, only six required closer examination, and two of those drivers did not have a license. It does not appear that any of the drivers were under the influence.

Another checkpoint only got 120 vehicles over the night, but they had a far higher diversion rate, doing closer examinations on nine cars. Four drivers had a suspended license, and another didn't have a license at all. At this checkpoint, the police did make a single OVI arrest.

The last checkpoint encountered a total of 191 vehicles while it was open, and 10 of those cars were pulled aside for closer examinations. One driver at the checkpoint went through OVI tests, while another driver nearby was arrested for allegedly operating their car while under the influence. Four got citations for not having a license.

All told, the police stopped more than 600 cars at the checkpoints and many more in the nearby patrols that they ran at the same time. That alone tells you that it is very important to know your rights and legal options when interacting with the police, especially if you find yourself facing OVI charges or getting arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
