How will an OVI conviction affect your career prospects?

Perhaps you were driving home from an evening out with friends when law enforcement stopped you on suspicion of operating a vehicle impaired.

You have never been arrested before. You are understandably nervous and concerned about an OVI conviction. What would this mean for your future and your hope for a career in medicine?

About OVI

In the state of Ohio, drunk driving penalties are harsh, even for a first offense. If testing shows that your blood alcohol content level is .08% or higher, you stand to lose your driving privileges for one year and spend a minimum of three days in jail. In addition, you are looking at the possibility of either a restricted license plate or installation of an ignition interlock device in any vehicle you drive, plus participation in an alcohol treatment program. You will also face a heavy fine and a separate fee for license reinstatement.

The background check

Any time you interview for a job, be aware that the recruiter will probably perform a background check as a matter of course. When the recruiter finds an OVI conviction on your record, he or she may pass you over for an applicant with a clean record who appears more trustworthy.

Career issues

If you seek a career in medicine, the OVI mark may disqualify you from obtaining the licensing or certification that you need. The same holds true for other professions such as teaching and law. You would have to go in another direction, one you may not find as fulfilling as your dream of becoming a medical professional.

Looking ahead

If law enforcement arrests you for OVI, explore your legal options without delay. Your legal team will protect your rights and conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding your arrest to check for any testing or administrative errors that may have occurred. The goal is to prevent possible damage to your plans for a career and achieve the best outcome possible for your case.
