Just transporting drugs can lead to legal charges

You have no plans to use illegal drugs. You have no plans to sell them. You're not involved with the entire scene. However, you do have a few friends who are.

One day, one of your friends asks you to drop a package off for them. They tell you it's already paid for. You just have to give it to another friend they know you're going to see later in the day.

You decide to do it. After all, the payment was made already, so you're not directly selling. It's literally just going to ride along in your car for a few miles and then change hands. That's it.

However, the police make a drug bust shortly after you drop it off. They have video footage of you giving the package to your friend. Can you still get arrested?

You can. Ohio law specifically states that you cannot knowingly transport illegal drugs. This is listed right along with offenses like:

  • Shipping illegal drugs
  • Preparing them for shipment
  • Distributing them
  • Preparing them for distribution
  • Delivering illegal drugs

Of course, there may be some gray areas. For instance, the law says it is illegal to do this knowingly. Did you really know what was in that package? Or were you oblivious, just thinking you were dropping off a backpack the other person had borrowed? Maybe you never looked inside or thought twice about what it might contain.

It's very important to understand exactly what the law prohibits, how you may break that law without realizing it, and what legal defense options you have.
